What is Presidential?

Date: 6/9/2010

Dear Reader:

In March of this year, at Hardwick-Day’s Summit on Enrollment and the Economy, I had the pleasure of holding a wide-ranging discussion with Ted Marchese. Ted is a senior consultant with Academic Search, where he conducts searches for college presidents and provosts and before that he was vice president of the American Association for Higher Education (AAHE) for 18 years, and editor of Change magazine.

We recorded the conversation share with you. There are three parts to this:

1) What do search committees consider presidential? You may be surprised. (5 min.)

2) Are there colleges bending the cost curve? You may not like the answer. Are there technical or pedagogical developments that would affect cost? (4 min.)

3) What innovations are colleges pursuing to maximize their academic investment? (under 2 min.)

Summer used to be a “slow time” on campuses and of course that’s changed, particularly for enrollment leaders. However, I wish you a summer with at least some slower time in which you can reflect on and gear up for the challenging discussions about costs, price, and innovation that are becoming standard on campuses around the country.

Best regards,

Jim
