Training, Development & Planning
Hardwick-Day can help augment leadership and staff skills in areas including:
- Searching for and recruiting new chief enrollment officers and financial aid directors;
- Serving as interim directors of financial aid;
- Mentoring newly hired or promoted financial aid and admissions directors;
- Cross training to develop primary skills and understanding in both financial aid and admissions;
- Building relationships with high school counselors;
- Identifying and articulating an institution’s distinctive reputation for conversations with parents and students; and
- Focusing admissions discussions on educational investment rather than prices.
Sample Workshop, June 2009: Admissions and Financial Aid Cross Training
Hardwick-Day’s Financial Aid Search and Development team have always urged us to take our work—optimizing grant aid and integrating aid strategy and admissions tactics—to the next level by cross training admissions and financial aid staffs.
Increasingly, the best enrollment programs are staffed by versatile, widely-knowledgeable people. The benefit for families is one-stop expertise and stronger, more sustainable recruitment relationships. In an environment in which it is harder and harder to find experienced financial aid directors and senior admissions people, a cross-trained staff offers colleges a greater depth of talent, more professional advancement possibilities, better staff retention, more professionalism, and more effective recruitment.
With this as a backdrop, Hardwick-Day offered a jam-packed customized workshop in June 2009 featuring speakers and topics such as:
- Brett Schraeder, director of enrollment management for Occidental College: Management of Admissions and Financial Aid—How to Mutually Benefit
- Dave Pardieck, director of financial assistance for Bradley University: Management of Staff—How to Have a Productive and Cooperative Staff
- David Busse, managing director, financial aid executive search, Hardwick-Day: Financial Aid Packaging—It’s More than Nuts and Bolts
- Dan Nelson, assistant to the President for financial aid, enrollment, institutional research, and planning, Bethel University: Management Information for Decisions—How to Make Your Data Matter
- Jon Urish, director of admissions at Beloit College: Internal Institutional Relations—It’s More Than Having Coffee Together
- Kathy Ruby, assistant vice president for enrollment and dean of student financial aid at St Olaf College: Budgeting for Students and the Office—How and Why the Numbers Matter
- Herald Johnson, associate, Hardwick-Day: Personal Development—Who You are Does Count
- Sally Daniels, director of the office of parent and family relations, Augsburg College: External Relations—It’s More Than Filing Reports on Time
