Herald Johnson assists colleges in the areas of interim financial aid leadership, staff training and mentoring, and innovative programming. Herald is one of the most senior financial aid directors in the Midwest.

He retired from Augsburg College as Director of Financial Aid in 2006 after serving 38 years there. While at Augsburg he created the first full-time financial aid operation in the college’s history and brought it from a one-person operation in 1970 into the present day one-stop enrollment center model (with about nine staff in the financial aid component of the enrollment center). In academic year 2006/07 Herald served as interim director of financial aid at the University of Portland, where he played a leadership role in bringing in one of the largest new student classes in the school’s history.

Herald has held many leadership positions with professional financial aid associations, including two terms as president of the Minnesota Association of Financial Aid Administrators. He has presented at the Minnesota, Midwest, and National associations of financial aid administrators, the National Council of Higher Education Loan Programs, and other national, regional, and state financial aid conferences and workshops.

Herald has served on the advisory boards of Northstar Guarantee Inc. and Academic Funding Group. He has consulted with Deluxe Corporation Foundation, the Otto Bremer Foundation, and Nash Finch Company on corporate scholarship programs. He was a board member of Minnesota Dollars for Scholars and the Minnesota Minority Education Partnership.

He has also given financial aid night presentations to students and parents at high schools, community education centers, and churches.

Herald is a graduate of Augsburg College with a major in History and minor in Philosophy.
